Sambanova features ten duets with Joan on guitar or mandolin and Laura Caviani on piano. All of the songs are influenced by several styles of Brazilian popular music. Sambanova No. 1, Sambanova No. 2 and Samba for Jake are sambas. La Bellevue is a bossa nova. Joan’s Baião and Sertão are baiãos and Choro in D minor is a choro. There are three cover songs: Pauleando by guitarist João Lyra, Samambia by Brazilian pianist Cesar Mariano, and Triste, by the innovative bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. In addition to Joan and Laura, the well known Brazilian percussionist, Cyro Baptista, can be heard on several cuts.
